NAZIS SEEK DECISION
ADVANCE ON MAIN DEFENCES OF ■ LENINGRAD (United Press Association—Tel°graph Copyright) (Rec. 1.10 a.m.) LONDON, August 22. Hitler is staking everything on a super-human effort to achieve a decisive result on the Eastern Front. The Germans have made territorial gains, hut there is no evidence to suggest that they have seriously crippled Russia’s military power. The position on the various sectors is as follows:— LENINGRAD.—The Germans are closing in on the main defences of Leningrad, the second city of Russia and a great engineering centre. It is claimed that, with the exception of Singapore, Leningrad is the most strongly fortified city in the world and the Russians, if necessary, will defend it street by street and house by house. GOMEL.—The Russians have evacuated the town of Gomel. It is not yet known whether the Germans will drive north-east or south-east. If they go south-east they may threaten Kharkov, the heart of Russia’s main industrial area. UKRAINE.—The situation is not very clear, but it is evident that the Germans are trying to break through on a broad front to the industrial Eastern Ukraine. Fighting is going on some distance from the port of Odessa.
