OTAGO PRODUCE MARKETS FOWL WHEAT UNALTERED (P.A.) DUNEDIN, August 22. Recent heavy rainfalls have completely stopped all operations for the preparation of ground for the spring sowing of wheat in practically all districts in the South Island. The broken weather has caused a lack of orders in the meantime for seed wheat. The fowl wheat market remains unaltered. The wholesale value is 5/10 a bushel, sacks extra, with small lots ex store saleable at 6/6 a bushel. There is no change in the oats market. Inquiries are still being received from the North Island for oats for feeding purposes and from Canterbury for seed oats. Offerings from the country are scarce and this source of supply appears to have dried up while the price order of 3/11 f.o.b.s.i. continues to operate. Stocks held in Dunedin are required for seed purposes and the market shows little change. Truck lots are worth £6/5/- a ton, sacks extra, and small lots ex store £6/15/-, sacks extra. During the week there have been further inquiries for potatoes for shipment to the North Island and this has resulted in a continuation of the depletion of stocks held in Dunedin. The market is firm with sales being made for shipment at higher prices than those ruling last week. The present quotation from Dunedin is £ll/10/- f.o.b.s.i. a ton for whites for deliveries ex store, Dunedin. Freshly picked whites are worth £lO/10/- a ton. King Edwards, which are now in short supply, are worth higher values. Some activity is still taking place in most seed lines. Overseas inquiries continue, especially for white clover. CANTERBURY MARKETS QUIET (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 22. The grain and produce markets this week have been quiet apart from a little local interest in the potato and small seed markets. Auckland reports indicate that the market there is at present more than well supplied with potatoes. Quotations for Dakotas are reported to be £l2 ex wharf, which seems to be lower than the current quotation of £9/10/- a ton on trucks, locally would warrant. The market in Christchurch has firmed during the week, but there are no orders in from outside, and it appears that interest is purely local and probably among merchants. Whites and Dakatos are quoted at £9/10/- on trucks, apd Sutton’s at £ll a ton. There has been some inquiry among merchants for small seeds, but prices have not moved. The recent heavy rains will probably defer spring activity, but in spite of this the market is more cheerful this week.

GORE HORSE SALE LARGEST ENTRY OF SEASON The biggest entry of ‘the season was forward at the monthly horse sale conducted by Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd. in its horse bazaar, Gore, yesterday, when more than 70 horses were offered. The demand was good and the sale was up to expectations, being on a par with recent sales. If the prices were not high it was because quality was lacking. Top price of the sale was secured for a three-year-old registered mare by Askhin from Maggie Footprint, this horse being sold o naccount of Mr Robert Miller (Seaward Downs). The purchaser was Mr Peter Walker (Palmerston). In the working section top price was £2l, this figure being secured for a six-year-old mare offered on account of Mr F. N. Jones (Waitane) and purchased by Mr J. B. Nicol, "Riverview,”

Gore. A special entry of ponies by Mr W. Wilhelmsen (Mataura) made good competition and prices for two-year-olds and upwards ranged from £6 to £lO. Hacks sold up to £l4, this price being paid for a five-year-old pony gelding offered on account of Mr Alex Waddell (Walkaka Valley). The purchaser was Mr J. Smith (Wendon ley)RIVERSDALE STOCK SALE There was a good demand for ewe hoggets at the monthly stock sale held at Riversdale for which excellent prices were secured. Eight pens were on offer, and these met with a good demand at from 27/1 to 35/-. The latter price was obtained for a line of 130 offered by J. E. Watson and Co. Ltd. on account of Mr W. H. Hargest (Mandeville). Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd. also sold a choice line at 34/10. Twotooth ewes brought up to 34/3, while full and failing-mouth sorts realized up to 24/2. A clearing sale of harness and sundries was also conducted by J. E. Watson and Co. Ltd. on account of Mr E. Black (Balfour). Market rate- were realized.
