WOMEN’S PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE

PARCELS DESPATCHED

The monthly meeting of the Invercargill Women’s Metropolitan Patriotic Committee was held on Thursday afternoon. Those present were Mesdames J. R. Martin (chairman), J. R. Hanan, J. Mcllwraith, M. Simmonds, Stanley Brown, Milward, Smith, W. A. Brown, Acton, R. N. Todd, Gough, Ruthven, Marshall. Apologies were received from Mesdames J. Hargest, Walker, Pasley and A. J. Neil. Mrs Stanley Brown reported that 1195 parcels had been packed and were being despatched from the depot this week; 2000 parcels is the quota for Southland to be sent by September 30, and 600 of this number will be forwarded by the Gore Committee. The Christmas cakes should be ordered now, so it was decided by the Colpmittee that, as larger cakes would be fresher and more palatable, two large cakes should be sent in each case of ten parcels, that is one cake for every five men. Mrs Mcllwraith reported that the sale of programmes for “Britannia” on the streets of Invercargill last week had brought in the sum of £77/6/-. The committee wishes to thank all those who helped to make this effort such a success. Morning and afternoon teas will be served to the soldiers on leave at the R.S.A. rooms. Gifts of cakes and sandwiches will be very acceptable, especially on Thursday of next week and these may be left at the R.S.A. rooms. Mrs Milward spoke of the repertory play which is to be given in the theatre on September 8, 9 and 10. Sub-commit-tees were asked to help with the sale of tickets as the proceeds are in aid of patriotic funds. These tickets may be obtained from Mrs B. W. Hewat. Mrs Simmonds reported that cases of goods for the Lady Galway Guild were packed and ready to be forwarded as soon as the Allotment Space Committee granted the space on the boats. Some exquisite baby clothes have been received and these are being packed in a special case for transit to Britain. The Georgetown Committee will be helping at the depot next week. SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS Hawthorndale: The sum of £3 was collected at the card evening last Wednesday. Georgetown: The monthly collection totals £52/8/6. A successful relations afternoon was held on Thursday when more than 50 women were present. Driver A. McFarlane gave an interesting talk on his experiences in Greece and Crete. The women of the Georgetown Committee will be on duty at the depot next week. Gladstone: A meeting was held last Monday and the guild is working as usual. Wool is on hand and anyone willing to knit this is asked to communicate with Mrs Scandrett, telephone 1627. Central: Anyone willing to knit may obtain wool from Mrs G. Millar, 101 Tay street. Avenal-Northend: The monthly collection is £39/2/- and the committee wish to thank all those who have donated.
