THREE CANDIDATES FOR OAMARU

MR MILNER AND MR COONEY OPPOSE MINISTER There will be at least three candidates for the Oamaru seat at the General Election, fox- which the candidature of Mx- Frank Milner, C.M.G., rector of the Waitaki Boys’ High School, has just been announced. Besides the Minister of Health (the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer), the sitting member, who is certain to receive the Laboux- nomination, Mr M. F. E. Cooney will contest the election as an Independent. Mr Cooney was the National Party’s candidate at the last General Election. He has announced that he will stand in “liberal and progressive interests as opposed to extreme elements.” Both Mi- Nordmeyer and Mr Cooney are old boys of the Waitaki Boys’ High School. Mi- Nordmeyer was a pupil in the period of Mr Milner’s rectorship. A distinguished scholar, an authority on international affairs, especially those of the Pacific, and one of the ablest speakers in the Dominion, Mr Milnexwas born and educated in the Dominion. He has held his present position of rector of the Waitaki Boys’ High School since 1906. He was to have retired about a year ago, but was persuaded by the board of governors to retain his position fox- the duration of the war. Under his guidance the Waitaki Boys’ High School has become one of the leading secondary schools in New Zealand.
