DOUBLE WIN FOR HARMONY ROW

POINT-TOPOINT AT KNAPDALE A feature of the fifth annual point-to-point meeting of the Eastern Southland Hunt Club, which was held on Mr S. Graham’s property at Knapdale on Saturday, was the success oi K. Whiteley’s Harmony Row, in winning both the Wantwood and Eastern Southland Steeplechases. Harmony Row, jumped exceptionally well m botn events and displayed plenty, of speed. The programme began with a pony drag hunt for juvenile riders, there being 10 followers. G. Wayte was master and W. Wayte huntsman.. A good standard of jumping was given throughout the course. Mr M. Roche (vice-president) acted for the president, Mr A. Wayte and Mr T. M. Kelly was secretary. They were assisted by a strong committee. An innovation was the use of loud-speakers. Mr D. Kelly was the announcer. The results of the steeplechases and

the competitions are as follows:— WAIKAKA STEEPLECHASE. About one mile and a-half. Weight 12st, for maiden horses other than thoroughbreds (to be judged on ground) hunted this season behind the Eastern Southland pack. First prize, trophy valued at 2 guineas; second, trophy valued at 1J guineas; third, trophy valued at 1 guinea.—A. Dodd’s PADDY (owner) 1, W. Wayte’s FULL FLIGHT (owner) 2, J. B. Wilson’s TE ANAU (owner) 3. Also ran: Blackbird (R. McCallum), Te Kaha (G. Herbert), Crown Top (A. Bromby), Gold Top (A. E. Whiteley), Gimpy (R. McVicar). Gold Top led over the first fence, being closely followed by Full Flight and Gimpy. Full Flight was leading coming into the straight for the first time, Crown Top running second followed by Blackbird. Going along the back Paddy put in a good run and drew level with Full Flight. He came away to win comfortably from Full Flight, who finished three lengths in front of Te Anau, the latter making a fast finish for third place. Blackbird was fourth.

WANTWOOD STEEPLECHASE. About two miles. Weight, list, for horses that have not won a race of any description. First prize, trophy valued at 3 guineas; second, trophy valued at 2 guineas; third, trophy valued at 1 guinea. K. Whiteley’s HARMONY ROW (owner) 1, Miss G. Jones’s GLADSTONE (L. Jones) 2, J. R. Cochrane’s NIGGER MAC (J. Cochrane) 3. Also ran: Shadow Boy (A. Redman). The field got away to a good start, Nigger Mac being the first to show out. Shadow Boy lost his rider at the third fence and this left only three in the race. Going along the back Nigger Mac increased his lead to about 20 lengths, but lost this advantage when he ran off a fence. Harmony Row then went to the front, followed by Gladstone, with Nigger Mac a good distance back. They finished in this order. Gladstone put up a challenge coming into the straight but Harmony Row held on to win easily by eight lengths.

EASTERN SOUTHLAND STEEPLECHASE. About two miles. Weight 12st. First prize, trophy valued at 5 guineas; second, trophy valued at 3 guineas; third, trophy valued at 2 guineas.—K. Whiteley’s HARMONY ROW (owner) 1, G. Kelly’s CONVERSE (owner) 2, B. Irwin’s BLUE BIRD (owner) 3. Also ran: Anon (N. Kelly), Rosaleen Dhu (R. Gibson), Rollem (R. Ford), Rifle Range (W. Scott), Horn’s Reef (T. Pankhurst), Blackbird (J. Burke), Gladstone (L. Jones). Rosaleen Dhu, Blue Bird, Anon and Gladstone immediately went to the front and took the first jump in line, being followed by Converse, Harmony Row and Blackbird. Rifle Range, Horn’s Reef and Rollem ran off at the double and dropped back. Going out of the straight the second time Rosaleen Dhu was leading from Anon, Harmony Row and Gladstone being close up. Rosaleen Dhu fell at the wire and Anon also unseated her rider, leaving Harmony Row in the lead from Gladstone and Converse. Converse moved into second place along the back, but the result was never in doubt, Harmony Row coming away to win easily by 15 lengths. Converse finished second eight lengths in front of Blue Bird. Gladstone was fourth.

Whiteley 1, Shirley Mullen 2, C. Bristow 3, Roma Hood 4. A “hat” collection realized £26. A donation will be made to patriotic funds.
