GERMAN PEOPLE ARE DISAPPOINTED
NO ANNOUNCEMENTS OF SUCCESSES THRUST BY NAZIS MAY BE CHECKED (United Press Association —Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 1.20 a.m.) LONDON, July 21. German radio listeners were disappointed on Sunday to hear no reports of spectacular successes on the Eastern Front. This was the first week-end since the attack on Russia began that the German radio did not broadcast exultant communiques claiming great victories ir the East and an American commentator has pointed out that the misgivings of the German people have increased rapidly as a result. It is considered in London that the second great Nazi thrust has been checked by the Russians. The Russian communique reports fighting 140 miles behind the furthest point of the German advance, showing that the Nazis have failed to consolidate their gains. There was stubborn fighting during the night in the NovogradVolynsk sector. It is significant that the Germans have not claimed the capture of Kiev, although they stated nine days ago that its fall was imminent. Moscow had its sixth “alert” last night, but no bombs were dropped. It is officially stated that the capital has not yet been bombed.
