FIFTH COLUMNISTS IN CRETE

PRIESTS AND HAWKERS Among fifth columnists whom a wounded soldier who has returned to Auckland said the New Zealanders had seen in Crete were a type of priest, dressed in black, with long hair rolled up at the back. “They had been on the island for some time,” he said, “and appeared to have the confidence of the islanders. But before the blitz started they all cleared out and took their gear with them. We captured a few during the fighting and found maps in their possession. “Again, in Crete there were many kinds of hawkers who came round our camps and we were sure that some of them were ‘fifthos.’ After a while we trusted nobody. At the evacuation there were strangers trying to push aboard with our fellows. Needless to say, they were left behind.”
