STEWART ISLAND

DAMP, FOGGY WEATHER Although there has been slight improvement in the weather at times at Stewart Island the atmosphere still remains damp and foggy. Mt. Anglem still has snow on top. This weather is in big contrast to that experienced at this time last year, when it was exceptionally • warm and there was an acute shortage of water. During the weekend a heavy south- earterly wind accompanied by heavy rain, swept the

bay and the seas were to be seen breaking over the approach to the wharf. Large quantities of seaweed have been washed up on the beach. LAUNCH STRANDED In the early hours of Tuesday morning, in the height of a heavy southeasterly, the launch Marapuna broke her moorings and was stranded on the Halfmoon Bay beach in the morning. She was found to be badly damaged and has become a total wreck. Judging by the damage done, it is apparent that she had been in contact with several rocks while being washed ashore. She was owned by the Bluff

Fish and Oyster Company, but had been out of commission for some time and instructions were being awaited for her to be towed to Bluff for repairs. She was fitted with a five horse-power petrol engine. After breaking her moorings she must have come in contact with the Tainui, owned by Mr Carrol Hansen, Bluff. The Tainui suffered slight damage, losing her bowspit, which was found washed up on the beach at high water mark. The extra high tides during the day threw the Marapuni high up on the beach, where she has been left stranded. During the day she was stripped of her masts and rigging.

Clive Brook has written a story around events in Paris during the evacuation before the Nazi invasion which Paramount is considering for production in England. Mr Brook is there, and if the deal materializes it is likely that he will star in the film.
