DEATH OF WYNDHAM OFFICER CAPTAIN M. C. RICE Captain Melville Clark Rice, eldest son of Major and Mrs Stanley Rice, of Wyndham, who was killed in ' action in Crete, was born at Wyndham and was well known throughout Southland. He received his education at the Wyndham Primary School and the Otago Boys’ High School and on completing his education he joined the firm of Hunter Bros, and Rice, of which his father was a principal. He continued in the employment of the firm until it was taken over by Dalgety and Co., Ltd., and he then entered into partnership with his father in the firm of Rice and Son, public accountants and secretaries. He was later appointed town clerk to the Wyndham Town Board and secretary of the Oware Dairy Factory. He also held the positions of secretary of "the Wyndham Golf Club and secretary of the Wyndham branch of the National Party, and he was associated with many other Wyndham organizations. He was keenly interested in the territorial movement, in which he rose to the rank of captain, and it was with this rank that he went overseas.

Captain Rice is survived by his wife and two young children. As an officer he earned the high regard of the men who served with him in New Zealand and overseas, evidence of this being given in a letter received at Wyndham recently from a Wyndham soldier overseas. The letter stated that Captain Rice was well thought of and that he had set a high standard in the “tough stuff” in Greece. SOUTHLAND CASUALTIES Private J. S. Bell, who has been reported wounded, is the seventh son of Mrs A. Bell, 149 Janet street, Invercargill, and the late Mr F. Bell, Forest Hill. He was born in Ayrshire. Scotland, and arrived with other members of the family in Southland in 1911. He was educated at the North Forest Hill school and worked in a cheese factory for many years. When he enlisted early in the war he was employed by the Winton branch of the Southland Electric Power Supply. He was a keen footballer and represented the Central District on many occasions. Three other brothers are also serving overseas. Three older brothers served in the last war.

Lance-Corporal R. A. Todd, reported wounded, is a son of Mrs G. C. A. Todd, Elies road. He was born in Invercargill and was educated at the Middle school and the Southland Boys’ High School. He worked in Invercargill for some time and later took up a position in Nelson, where he enlisted. He was a keen footballer, being a member of the Invercargill Club before going north. Later he represented Nelson. Lance-Corporal Todd, who is 22 years of age, enlisted soon after the outbreak of war.

Sergeant-Pilot George Arthur Johnston, who has been reported missing on air operations, is a son of the late Mr John Johnston, of the Vulcan Foundry, Leet street, and Mrs Johnston, 59 Hensley street, Invercargill. He was educated at the Waihopai school and the Southland Boys’ High School and was employed at his father’s foundry in Leet street, where he qualified as an engineer. He left there two years ago and was then employed by the Shell Oil Company in Dunedin. He gained his A licence at the Southland Aero Club before the war began. He was scout master of the Gladstone Boy Scouts for many years and was also interested in swimming. Sergeant-Pilot Johnston is 25 years of age. Private James Leonard Patterson, who has been reported wounded, is the son of Mr and Mrs R. J. Patterson, 68 Catherine street, Invercargill. He was born at Winton 28 years ago and was educated at the Springhills and Hokonui schools. On enlisting he was employed at coal-mining on the West Coast. He enlisted early in the war. Quartermaster-Sergeant Reginald Dawson Jenkins, who has been reported wounded, is the son of Mrs C. Jenkins, Invercargill. He was born in Invercargill and was educated at the Georgetown and Ranfurly schools. He was employed by Drages Company, Ltd., Christchurch as traveller in Southland before enlisting early in the war He was also a member of the St. Paul’s Athletic Club. Quarter-master-Sergeant Jenkins was only slightly wounded and has been discharged from hospital. He is 22 years of age. . Advice that two of their sons are included among recent casualties nas been received by Mr and Mrs T. Ramage, Mataura. Driver F. T. Ramage is reported missing and Sergeant C. S. Ramage is reported wounded. Both men were born at Balciutha, Seigeant Ramage receiving his education there and Driver Ramage receiving his education at Invercargill and Mataura. For some time Driver Ramage was employed by Mr W. E. Candy as a rabbitskin buyer at Mataura. He was laier attached to the engineer’s department at the Mataura Paper Mills, where he remained for about two years. He enlisted from Mataura. Sergeant Ramage is a married man, his wife living at Invercargill. At the time of his enlistment he was employed by the Railway Department at Invercargill. About a month ago Mr and Mrs Ramage received advice that another son, Private P. J. Ramage, had been killed in action.
