BETWEEN OURSELVES

Cousin Joan of Arc: I have written to tell you the time of the meeting, and I hope that it will be convenient for my Brydone Cousins. Peter Pencil is coming too.

Cousin David’s Lulu: Tomorrow is the day of the clan meeting, so I will be coming to meet you and all the other cousins at Mataura. Are you hoping for a fine day? I am.

Cousin Norman: The first sharpeners you mention did not arrive, so please judge your own entry for that week. The results of the others arc on this page in another column.

Cousin Gold Star: If you send poems or stories which are not your own work you must write “copied" at the top of the page, and then I will know they are not intended for the competition. Cousin Orange Blossom: It is better. I think, if you all take the credit for your own work, instead of hiding behind a penname. You should not mind your aunt teasing you, for you should be proud your entries were good enough to be printed and earn prizes.

Cousin Hair Bell: Is this your new penname, or do you mean it to be the flower harebell? I have looked for your mind sharpeners but cannot find them. Are you sure you posted them?

Cousin Fairy Snowdrop: Have you managed to blow the whistles yet? I wonder whose pen will last the longest? Did you use yours to write the letter to me? Cousin Cowlick: Thank you for the Original Verse. If Mr. Printerman can find the space you may see it in the Chronicle today.

Cousin Happy-go-Lucky: I hope that you will write for the Chronicle as regularly as your sisters did. Welcome to the Little Southlanders. Has the enrolment card arrived?

Cousin Freesia: Are you wearing the brownie suit in the parade tomorrow? I hope that you carry off one of the prizes, and that the bazaar is a great success. Cousin Bookworm: Percy is sorry that he cannot come to your bazaar today, but this is the day that he promised to come with me to the meeting of two new clans at Mataura and Brydone. Cousin Joyful Tinies: A number of my cousins have written to say they are saving silver paper, so we should have a good pile to help the war effort. The entries are in the Chronicle this morning. Cousin Coronation Lassie W.L.: Your degrees almost need a line of their own, there are so many of them. How many more marks do you need for the degree of Most Able Contributor?

Cousin Black Beard W.L.: Do you go round the traps every day? You must have a busy time setting and watching them all. Which of the horses do you like to ride best?

A reply in Between Ourselves entitles you to one mark lor the degree of Writer of Letters (W.L.). Fifty marks are needed.

Cousin Goldilocks: It is such a long time since your last letter that I did not recognise the writing at first. Do you know any other Little Southlanders at your new school?

Cousin Flowcr-o’-thc-Lily W.L.: Are you chief cook-and-bottle-washer while your mother is away? What a busy person you will be. Sorry I was not here when you called on Saturday.

Cousin Elsie Webster: Shall I see you at the meeting of the new clan tomorrow? I hope so, and I also hope to meet some more new cousins. Have you a name you would like to use in Between Ourselves?

Cousin Robin Hood; Don’t you find the water rather cold for wading? The days have been too wet and cold for the pigeons, so they have gone to find a wanner shelter. Sorry I cannot send books out to country cousins. Have you a school library?

Cousin Shicla: Peter must be a clever cat if he can fetch the rabbits for your father. Do you think he is as clever as your Reko?

Cousin Golden Valley: You are writing so regularly now that you will soon have the Writer of Letters degree and the prize of 2/- that goes with it. Have you heard any more about the wireless? Cousin Frccsia: The results of the late Mind Sharpeners are in another part of the Chronicle. From Invercargill we can see the snow-capped mountains, but there were only a few flakes of snow in town.

j Cousin Sunset: Do you think you will be a Most Able Contributor before the end lof the year? Congratulations on becoming i a V.A.C. Did you enjoy the clan page? I Cousin Snow Queen (Spar Bush): Could i you choose another peifmame for Between Ourselves? This one belongs to another Little Southlander, though it is a few weeks since she has used it and you may I not have noticed it. i Cousin Lake of Shining Waters: Your ! long letter was very welcome. Perhaps I shall see you some day when you have a clan in your district and I come to your first meeting. Are there many Little Southlanders at your school? Cousin Laughing Eyes: What is the name of the other bantam? Which one lays the most eggs for you? I hope to hear from you often this year. t • Cousin Nancy Lee: Do you know many other Little Southlanders? Now that you have begun to write again I hope to hear from you regularly. Cousin Alan-a-dalc: An enrolment card has been sent to you. and you are now a Little Southlander. How would you like to have a clan in your district?

Cousin Flower-o’-lhe-Forest: When I come to see you tomorrow I will explain about the clan page and how you can work for it. Now that winter has come the days are very cold here too.
