MY PET
—PRIZE— Oh pretty little rabbit, Will you be my pet? I’ll feed you up with lettuce leaves And never once forget. I’ll keep you from the other pets, The naughty, rowdy pup, I think if he got half a chance, He’d like to eat you up. I’ll put you in a rabbit hutch, And keep you safe in that, Away from great big prowling hawks, And my favourite tabby cat. —Prize of 1/- to Cousin Betty McNoe A.C., (9), Heddon Bush R.D., Winton. —PRIZE— Pets are all about our sunny backyard, To keep them quiet is very hard; Milk for lambs, meat for dogs, Wheat for chickens, oats for hogs. We feed them morning, noon and
night, To make them healthy, sturdy and bright; But often when we are late They meet us at the wooden gate. They have theii' food then run away, To have some fun as well as play; But when feeding time comes round once more, They all come home just as before. —Prize of 1/- to Cousin Maurice Smith (8), Wendonside R.D., Gore.
—PRIZE— See, my lovely pussy cat, So fluffy and so small, Purring softly on the mat, At my beck and call. My dog is also there to take A bone or meat for tea, And always waiting at the gate, After school for me. The goldfish swims around in glee, In its large glass dish Never mourning for the sea, Or the other fish. Within its cage my parrot talks, And says, “How do you do?” And when I’m going for my walks, “Please miss, may I come too?” And now, dear readers, you have heard, Of all my pets divine, The dog, the fish, the cat that purred, And parrot's feathers fine. —Prize of 1/- to Cousin Cora Pedlar (14), 169 St. Andrew street.
—VERY HIGHLY COMMENDED— I have a little kitty cat With coat as soft as silk, And every time he sees me He thinks he’d like some milk. We have two naughty puppies, They romp about in fun, But when they see the chickens, They like to make them run. I have two woolley lambies, A black one and a white, They frolick in the paddocks, And make a pretty sight. —3 marks to Cousin Jean McNoe (7), Heddon Bush R.D., Winton.
—VERY HIGHLY COMMENDED— Perhaps a fluffy, green-eyed cat, Who sits and purrs all day, Or drinks a plate of finest cream But claws you when at play. Perhaps a wiry terrier, The greatest friend on earth, Who’d run and play and be a chum And always prove his worth. Perhaps a pony, small but strong, On whom you’d love to ride And gallop over hills and lanes Of all the countryside. Perhaps a rabbit, fluffy, white, Or just a little bird That whistles gaily all day long The sweetest songs you’d heard. But whether its a cat or dog Or any other pet, They are the very finest friends That anyone can get. —3 marks to Cousin Raynor Huffadine (15), M.A.C., 94 Nelson street.
—VERY HIGHLY COMMENDED— Most children like to have a pet, Some have the queerest things, Like lizards, frogs or tadpoles: But I’d like a bird that sings. Some boy's like to keep white mice; I do not like them much, I’d rather have a rabbit And keep it in a hutch. —3 marks to Cousin lan McEwen (10), 87 Morton street.
—VERY HIGHLY COMMENDED— My pet’s name is Peter, He’s a very funny cat, He runs off with all our things, Boots, shoes or a hat. My pet pup’s name is Texas, For short we call him Tex, And as we have some more wee
pups, I hope to call one Rex. My parrot’s name is Joey, A clever bird is he, Sometimes he sees an angry cat, And quickly flies to me. —3 marks to Cousin Melva Lake, V.A.C., (10), Cainard Station.
