The Hon. T. F. O’Byrne, M.L.C., returned to Invercargill by the express last evening from Wellington. Mr I. G. Elder, who is leaving this week to begin training with the Royal Air Force at Levin, was entertained by the staff of Mr D. M. Malloch at his home, and was made a presentation of a military hold-all. All members of the staff joined in expressing best wishes for Mr Elder’s future. Mr A. L. Williams has been appointed grand secretary of the United Ancient Order of Druids for the North Island. The Gazette announces the appointment of Mr J. S. Jessep as a member of the Board of Native Affairs. (Press Association).
Mr J. R. Verity, who is leaving the staff of the Waihopai School to enter the Royal Air Force, received a number of individual gifts from pupils yesterday in addition to a presentation from the gardening class of Standard IV. On behalf of the pupils of his own class Master Boyce Richardson presented him with a fountain pen. Later in the day Mr Verity was entertained by the staff at afternoon tea and on behalf of the staff and school committee the head master, Mr Archibald Thomson, presented him with a travelling rug. Mr R. E. Cocklin, another member of the staff, who is entering the Navy, received a presentation of a toilet outfit.
