APPLICATION FOR SANCTUARIES

BUSH AREA ON BLUFF HILL “I have been directed by my council to make application to the Department of Internal Affairs through your society to have the Bluff Domain of 180 acres 38 poles and the borough endowment of 140 acres declared sanctuaries,” stated the town clerk of Bluff in a letter read at the meeting of the council of the Southland Acclimatization Society last night. The letter added:— “My council is much concerned with the amount of destruction to native birds in the bush area on Bluff Hill and is, therefore, anxious to have all possible protective measures taken at the earliest possible date.” It was decided to forward the application.

Mi- G. F. Strang wrote forwarding a ring taken from the leg of a swan shot at Waituna by Mr D. McNaughton on May 13. The swan weighed 12£ lb. It was stated that the ring was probably one of the Canterbury Society’s markings. A request that the society should consider obtaining the services of an expert to advise on the suitability of Southland for quail (not necessarily Californian) and for pheasants was made by the Southland Duckshooters’ Association. The Otago Society, the letter stated, appeared to be having fair success with pheasants at the Waitaki hatchery. It was the intention of the Otago Society to rear enough pheasants to provide shooting regardless of whether the birds would increase under natural conditions. The association also asked that the local restricted area for paradise ducks be enlarged to give more protection to birds gathering along the Oreti River. The letter was referred to the game committee.

It was decided to institute a vermin destruction campaign beginning on July 1 and to give a prize of £lO to the competitor obtaining the greatest number of points, with a second prize of £5 and with consolation prizes of complimentary fishing or shooting licences to all competitors securing over 200 points. Tire vermin includes hawks, rats, .wild cats and hedgehogs.
