BLUFF NEWS

SUCCESSFUL BAZAAR The annual bazaar and concert in aid of St. Matthew’s Anglican Church Ladies’ Guild was held in the Town Hall. The pleasingly varied concert programme was produced by Mrs R. Fowler assisted by Mrs A. Hart. The Mayor, Mr N. W. McGorlick, officially opened the function. The Mayor said it gave him great pleasure to open a function for such a worthy cause. The labours of a year’s work were shown by the splendid stalls. A pleasing aspect was that all denominations came along to assist the others in their annual efforts and this he considered a very fine gesture. The programme was as follows:— Songs, Misses Ruby Hanning, Rata Coote, N. Perkins, M. Metzger, J. Edwards, B. Bradshaw. S. Hart, Valerie Wilcox, Messrs M. and S. West; banjo solo, Master H. Craig; dances, Messrs Ward, Gibbs and Jean O’Connor; sketches, the Rev. C. N. Luker and Mr Peter Metzger, Mr C. Beatson and assistants; item. Sea Scouts Band. An efficient chorus assisted considerably. The orchestra comprised Mrs E. Moon, Messrs M. Gilooly and H. A. Ferguson. The stall-holders were: Produce, Mesdames J. Vincent, C. Jackson, C. Hannan and W. F. Cameron; sweets, Mesdames O. F. Metzger, N. T. McDonald, Misses H. Nichol and N. McDonald; jellies, Mesdames A. Nightingale and R. Spencer; cakes, Mesdames A. Hart, R. Fowler, R. Waddel, J. Williamson and G. Applegarth; cafeteria, Mesdames C. N. Luker, A. E. Budd, C. Goodall and W. E. Johnstone; art, Mesdames W. Valentine, Murdoch. Burtenshaw and Miss Norma Niven. At the conclusion of the second night’s programme Mi’ Luker thanked all those who had assisted in any way to make this year’s effort an unqualified success. SPRING TIDES

There have been exceptionally high spring tides at Bluff in the last few days. At the peak of one tide the water was but a few inches from the top of the planking on the main wharf. Old residents say these are the highest spring tides for many years.

40-HOUR WEEK At the monthly meeting of the Bluff Borough Council a letter was read from the Lakes County Council seeking support for its resolution that the Government be pressed to waive the 40-hour week during the present time of emergency. The Mayor, Mr N. W. McGorlick, said he thought local bodies should keep out of matters savouring of politics and that the lead should come from the Government. Cr L. G. Newman moved and Cr S. G. Mitchell seconded that no action be taken. An amendment that the council supports the resolution, moved by Cr E. Matheson and seconded by Cr H. J. Burke, was carried by five votes to three, Crs Newman, Mitchell and Metzger voting against the amendment.
