LINEN - FLAX At the request of the Imperial Government an appeal is being made to the farmers of New Zealand to sow a much greater area of linen flax. Fifteen thousand acres were sown last season and it is hoped to increase this area to 23,000 acres for the coming season. Of this total, 1000 acres are required within a 16 miles radius of Gore, and a factory is to be erected at this centre for the processing of the material. Apart from the sending of troops overseas, New Zealand can make no greater direct contribution to the Empire’s needs, at the present time, than the growing of this crop. A public meeting of farmers is to be held in the R.S.A. rooms, Gore, today, and at this meeting Mr W. Faithful, fields instructor, Department of Agriculture, will supply particulars about the growing of the crop and contracts. The production of linen flax is of vital importance.
