BOXING

LOUIS BEATS BAER IN TITLE FIGHT (Rec. 7 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 24. Joe Louis, retained his title in a match with Buddy Baer, who was unable to answer the bell at the start of the seventh round. Louis was knocked through the ropes in. the first round but he was back at the count of four. Thereafter, he completely outclassed the challenger. Baer was sent to the canvas twice in the sixth round. He had just risen, as the referee was reaching the _ count of 10, when the bell rang. Louis apparently did not hear the bell due to the roar of the crowd of 40,000. He landed a terrific right which knocked Baer unconscious. The referee, Mr Donovan, said the last blow landed before the bell, but most observers differ. When Baer was unable to answer the bell the referee disqualified him.
