Miss Edna Lipscombe, Nelson street, is visiting Queenstown. Miss Betty Semmens, Conon street, has returned from Christchurch. Mrs E. S. Nichol, Duke street, has returned from a brief visit to Dunedin. Mrs G. B. Giller, of Christchurch is the guest of Mrs T. G. Giller, Duke street.

Mrs Mervyn Simmonds, Alice street, returns tomorrow from a visit to Waikaia.

Miss Philippa Hodge, Gladstone Terrace, has returned from a holiday in the north.

Mr and Mrs R. P. Fish, Ramrig street, leave on Wednesday to live in Hastings.

Mrs H. R. Williams, Norwood, Waikiwi, returned last evening from a holiday in Christchurch. Mr and Mrs E. N. J. Hannah, Geraldine, are the guests of Mrs G. T. Stevens, Park street. Mrs George Pinckney, Glenaray, Waikaia, is visiting Timaru, and will return at the end of next week.

Miss A. M. Charteris, child welfare officer, in Invercargill, leaves on Tuesday to take up a position at Taumarunui.

Mr and Mrs R. Hinton, Oamaru, are the guests of Mrs T. Hastings, Melbourne street, for the Stagg-Anderson wedding today. Mrs A. Wilson, Dunedin, who has been the guest of her sister, Mrs J. Hannan, Herbert street, has left to visit Mrs J. A. Kean, Lochiel. Mrs T. Wray Wilson, Avenal Flats, leaves tomorrow to spend a holiday in Christchurch, where she will be the guest of Mrs A. L. MacFarlane. Mr and Mrs James Hinton, Oamaru, who are visitors to Invercargill for the Stagg-Anderson wedding today, are the guests of Mrs P. Frampton, Duke street. Miss Shirley Owen-Johnston has arrived from Dunedin to spend the University vacation with her- parents, Dr and Airs A. W. Owen-Johnston, Thomson street.

Miss Mavis Brown, Gala street, is spending the week-end with her parents, Mr and Mrs A. J. Brown, Nightcaps. She has as her guest Miss Jean Bell, Elies road. Miss E. D. Hobson, Gala street, was hostess at tea in the Tudor Lounge yesterday in honour of Miss A. M. Charteris, Avenal Flats, who leaves at the beginning of the week for the north.

Mrs M. Stagg, of Christchurch, is a visitor to Invercargill for the marriage of her- son, Mr C. G. Stagg, to Miss Jean Anderson this afternoon and is the guest of Mrs Arthur Anderson, Yarrow street.

Mrs J. C. Prain, Gladstone Terrace, was hostess at tea during the week in honour of Mrs R. P. Fish. Mrs M. Fogarty, Duke street, and Mrs Perry will entertain friends in her honour this morning.

The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, and Lady Newall have graciously consented to accept office as patrons of the Royal Society of New Zealand for the Health of Women and Children (the Punket Society).—(P.A.) Shirley Harvey, of Browns, who was a successful entrant in the Christchurch Competitions, has been placed as follows:—Sailor’s Hornpipe, first; Seann Triubhais, second; Highland fling, second; ballet dance, third. All events were for children under 10 years of age. Shirley Harvey is a pupil of Miss Madge Flaus.

During the past month the work of the Invercargill Nursing Division of the St. John Ambulance Association has been carried out successfully under the guidance of Mrs G. M. Chapman, lady superintendent. Public duty has been undertaken on Saturdays by various members. Thanks are due to Mr A. J. Kingsland and his party who gave a demonstration in artificial respiration.

RED CROSS NEWS

WORK OF SOUTHLAND SOCIETY

The executive of the Southland Centre again wishes to thank the public of Southland for its continued and loyal support to all its various activities. The secretary (Mrs E. Sinclair) on a recent visit to headquarters, Wellington, learned that up to the present time all transactions and undertakings by the Southland Society were 100 per cent, efficient.

A meeting of delegates of the Southland Provincial Centre will be held on Saturday afternoon, May 24, in the St. John’s Sunday school hall, Tay street, beginning sharp at 1 p.m. As this meeting is of importance to the Southland District, delegates are urged to be present. ’Totices will be posted on Monday. The society wishes to thank Mr Bradshaw, Bluff, for the gift of a section to be sold on behalf of the local Red Cross Society. The following donations are also acknowledged with thanks:—Papatotora Sub-Committees, proceeds of dance, £5; final proceeds of picture benefit, £2/12/-. Mr Davis, the Papatotara Picture Theatre proprietor, has handed in the total sum of £37/12/-; Mataura Sub-Centre, £l5; “A Wellwisher,” 5/-; donation per Mrs Smythe, 15/-. Also goods from Mrs G. Meek (Fairfax), Granny Martin (Morton Mains), Joan and Anne Spiers, Mrs Ferguson (Woodend), Tuturau Ladies’ Group. Parcels have been received from Riverton, Waimahaka, Otautau and Woodend SubCentres and Mrs Fairweather (Hokonui). Next week members of the Gladstone Committee will be in charge of the depot. COMMITTEE REPORTS

Gladstone: There will be no meeting of the Sewing Guild next week, members being in attendance at the depot. Waikiwi: The Sewing Guild met on Thursday and completed the sewing of doctor’s towels and draw sheets. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, May 22, at the home of Mrs Fraser, North road.

North Invercargill: The Sewing Guild met last Tuesday and completed all hospital sewing. Central: The Sewing Guild met on Friday when all work in hand was completed. |: East xnvercargill: The Sewing Guild will meet on Monday in the Mitchell street Kindergarten when sewing will be distributed.

South Invercargill: The secretary, Mrs Brownlie, will be distributing sewing next week.

Georgetown: The Sewing Guild will meet on Wednesday, May 21, in the Presbyterian Sunday school hall, Centre street, at 2 p.m. Shetland shawl competition.—Winner, Mrs A. Macdonald, 108 Millar street, Georgetown. Invercargill Sub-Centre: A meeting of delegates was held on Thursday evening, May 15, Mi- J. D. Campbell presiding over a full attendance of members. Various Red Cross matters were discussed. The honorary secretary and treasurer (Mrs E. Sinclair) reported that £6BO had been collected on the recent street day. On a motion being put to the meeting, it was carried unanimously that the amount be handed over to the Southland Centre.

Regular monthly meetings are to be held on the second Thursday in the month in St. John’s Sunday school hall, Tay street, at 7 p.m. Metal badges.—These are in the course of production in Wellington and when they come to hand, orders will be fulfilled immediately.
