BATTALION BAND’S GOOD RECORD

63 PUBLIC APPEARANCES DURING YEAR

The Ist Battalion Band, Southland Regiment, appeared before the public on 63 occasions during the year ended March 31, 1941. This fact was mentioned in the annual report of the band presented at the annual meeting last night. “The band has had a particularly busy year,” stated the report. “Apart from ordinary playing engagements, it has been called upon to play at patriotic functions, farewells to soldiers and also for various parades with the Home Guard and the National Military Reserve. It is to be congratulated on lhese performances, some of which have been performed at great inconvenience to the bandsmen. However, they have the satisfaction of knowing that their good work is being appreciated by the public. “The Boys’ Band has also appeared on numerous occasions before the public and it also has to be congratulated on its fine performances. During the year the ranks of the band were depleted, a number being promoted to the senior band. However, full strength was soon restored. The appreciation of the public and the bandsmen are due to the untiring efforts of the conductor (Lieutenant A. McMaster) and it is through his good work during the year that the band has attained its high standard of performance. The DrumMajor, Mr F. Logan, is also to be congratulated on his fine work during the year. “During the year a strong social committee was formed with the idea of holding card evenings throughout the winter months and thereby helping to raise funds to augment the finances of the band.”

It was stated that the band began the year with a small credit balance, lout that its present financial position was much more satisfactory. The following officers were elected: President, Mr A. Cook; vice-presidents, Dr H. R. Gibson, Lieutenant L. A. Blackmore, Messrs W. Stewart, W. Thomas, H. Lyons, F. Lange, T. Wray Wilson, J. Holland, A. McClure, F. Holloway, D. Farney and S. Wills; secretary, Mr M. Wilson; treasurer, Mr W. Woodley; general committee, Messrs L. D. Monk, J. N. Shields, Wills, R. Donaldson, H. Lindsay and Lyons; band representatives on general committee, Messrs H. Larsen and W. Service; auditor, Mr H. R. Wilcox.
