BOOKMAKERS’ APPEAL DISMISSED
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 30. Commenting that there seemed to have been considerable flouting of the law for five years and the Court did not accept the evidence of the appellant, the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, in the Supreme Court today dismissed the appeal of Charles Joseph Williams, aged 41, against a sentence of six months’ imprisonment imposed by the Magistrate, Mr Goulding, on a charge of bookmaking. Sir Michael Myers said that the bookmaking could be stopped, although perhaps not entirely, by making offenders realize that imprisonment would inevitably follow.
