IMPRESSMENT OF RIFLES
An explanation of the procedure to be followed by the owners of .303 rifles, which are to be impressed by the Government for the Home Guard, was given last night by Captain W. Bell, area commander of the Guard. He said there had been some misunderstanding among owners of rifles who were members of the Guard.
Captain Bell said that all owners of rifles should hand them to the police. They would receive a receipt and copies would be sent to headquarters and to the area commanders and another would be retained in the police station. If an owner of a rifle was a regular attender at parades it would be reissued to him and he would surrender his receipt to the area commander. If the rifle was damaged on parade it would be repaired free of cost.
If the owner of a rifle was not a member of the Guard he could nominate a guardsman to whom it could be issued and as far as possible his request would be carried out, so long as the person nominated lived in the same district.
Captain Bell appealed to owners of rifles to hand in their weapons as soon as possible so that the Home Guard could be equipped with weapons. This would enable the members to make better progress with their training, he said.
