Mr Hugh Carswell left Invercargill by yesterday afternoon’s express for Dunedin, where he has been appointed assistant manager of the Dunedin ! branch of Wright, Stephenson and Company, Ltd. Mr C. V. Dayus ; of Dunedin, superintendent of the Live-Stock Division of the Department of Agriculture for Otago and Southland, and Mr H. R. Denize, principal stock inspector, are visiting Invercargill. The Rt. Rev. G. H. Jupp, of Dunedin, moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of* New Zealand, and Mrs Jupp, were present at the jubilee celebrations of the Presbytery of Mataura and St. Andrew’s Church
at Gore yesterday. Mr Jupp conducted a communion service in the morning and at a closing inspirational rally in the evening he conveyed greetings from I the General Assembly. i Mr R. Macgregor, meat inspector, of I Dunedin, is at present visiting Bluff. [ The oldest surviving Presbyterian Minister in New Zealand, the Rev. W. Hain, of Kennington, took part in the jubilee celebrations of the Presbytery of Mataura at Gore yesterday. Mr Hain, who is in his 98th year, is a member of presbytery. Mr W. Carswell, of Invercargill, who acted as secretary in organizing a dinner for representatives of Southland rabbit boards last night, was unable to ! attend because he was in hospital. Sympathy was expressed with him in I his illness.
The Rev. A. L. Miller, of Dunedin, moderator of the Synod of Otago and Southland, represented the synod at the jubilee celebrations of the Presbytery of Mataura and St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at Gore yesterday. Mr John J. Lee was appointed sole teacher at the Garston school by the Southland Education Board yesterday. The resignation of Mr Garnet R. Henry from the position was accepted. Mr A. H. Ritchie, of the staff of the railway booking office, Invercargill, has received notice of Iris promotion to the position of inwards goods clerk at Palmerston North.
Leading Aircraftman L. Frampton, R.N.Z.A.F., Levin, and his brother, Corporal M. Frampton, R.N.Z.A.F., Taieri, have returned north after spending their leave at their home in Invercargill.
Mr L. H. Burgess, who has been a member of the meter-reading 'staff of the Southland Electric Power Supply for the past 18 years, has accepted a position on the clerical staff of the Poverty Bay Electric Power Board. Leading Naval Airman J. Pickard, a son of Mr J. Pickard, Invercargill, who was wounded during a German air raid on April 16, has been discharged from hospital, where he was an inmate for a week, according to advice received by his father. Leading Naval Airman Pickard was to have travelled to Canada with other naval airmen to continue advanced training, but the injuries he received prevented him accompanying his companions. ■
