in the decision of a race. At Timaru on Saturday the winner of the Smithfield Handicap, Confidant, was trained by E. J. Ellis (Washdyke) and ridden by W. F. Ellis (Invercargill) and the I second horse, Rawhamai, was trained I by A. S. Ellis (Riccarton) and ridden by L. J. Ellis. Southland Acceptances Acceptances for the Southland winter meeting next Saturday close with the secretary (Mr J. E. Cuthill) at 5 p.m. tomorrow. Timaru Cup Winner King’s Toast, winner of the Timaru Cup on Saturday, was still eligible for hack races up to that race. Before his win in the Cup he had won only three races in two seasons, but he had been a consistent place-getter, having gained four seconds and seven thirds. His winnings up to Saturday totalled £745. Contact For New Zealand Contact, the 1936 Sydney Cup winner, has been purchased by a New Zealand owner and he is expected to arrive in New Zealand soon. Oamaru Trot Acceptances Acceptances for the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting next Saturday close tonight at 8 o’clock. Promising Pacer The most promising intermediate pacer in the Dominion today is tire Nelson Derby mare Haughty, who added to an already good record this season by annexing a double in easy fashion at Hawera. In all her races this mare has revealed speed and stamina above the average, and providing she can be induced to begin smarter she should be equal to holding her own in any company. It is not surprising that Haughty is a brilliant pacer, for her sire Nelson Derby was a fine racehorse who included among his many successes the Auckland Trotting Cup, while Regal Voyage built up a great record in the best classes about 10 years ago.
