SHIPMENT TO N.Z. TO AID WAR APPEAL
(P A.) WELLINGTON, April 26. The New Zealand War Funds appeal is receiving the support of leading film producers of the United States of America. Some time ago Mr R. Lyall Grant communicated with Mr Harold Auten, representative of Greater Union Theatres of Australia in New York, who promptly approached ten leading companies, including 20th Century Fox, Loews, Incorporated, Paramount, Warner Brothers, First National, Universal, Columbia, United Artists, and R.K.0., and obtained the co-operation of all. The result is the shipment of many articles used or worn by film stars in recent productions to be used in raising money here. Included are articles from such stars as Joan Bennett, Loretta Young, Bette Davis, Rosalind Russell, Norma Shearer, Vivien Leigh, Melvyn Douglas, Tyrone Power, Ray Milland, Franchot Tone, Don Ameche, Bing Crosby, and Charlie Chaplin. The collection is very varied and ranges from the black evening gown worn by Rita Hayworth in “Angels Over Broadway” to the mittens used by Paulette Goddard in “The Great Dictator.”. It includes the gold evening slippers worn by Loretta Young in “He Stayed for Breakfast,” the sunset gold evening bag of Norma Shearer in “Escape,” an old-fashioned lace handkerchief used by Greer Garson in “Pride and Prejudice,” and the silver grey gown of Alice Faye in Tin Pan Alley.” One gown worn by Joan Bennett in “The House Across the Bay” cost 900 dollars.
The whole shipment is conservatively estimated at 15,000 dollars. Gene Autry has sent the whole ensemble worn in one of his western films, Chaplin an officer’s cap with the double cross insignia and armband to match from “The Great Dictator,” and Hoiden and Milland the clothing worn in “I Wanted Wings.” How the collection is to be disposed of has not yet been determined, but it will possibly be first displayed at leading stores and perhaps later auctioned by radio.
