RESTRICTIONS ON MEAT
FURTHER RELAXATION IS URGED The recent announcement made by the Government of the partial lifting of the restrictions on the killing of ewes for export in the Southland and South Otago districts has been discussed by the Otago Provincial Council of the Farmers’ Union. The council states that while .appreciating the relaxing of the limitations on ewes, it was concerned that no announcement had been made regarding the lifting of restrictions on highcountry wethers. This class of sheep must be removed from the high country before the weather breaks. Unfortunately they will not settle on low country and are quite unsuitable for winter fattening. Mr R. S. Thompson, provincial president of the Farmers’ Union, telegraphed to the Minister of Agriculture, Mr J, G. Barclay, as follows:— “My council appreciates your relaxing the restrictions on ewes. We presume we can expect an early announcement regarding wethers as the position is critical.”
Mr Barclay has now replied: “Thanks for your telegram of April 21. In regard to wethers the stock position is being kept under close observation.” The matter, the council’s statement concludes, is extremely urgent as many of the hill country men cannot hold their stock beyond the end of the present month.
