TUATAPERE
EMERGENCY SCHEME
At the third public’ meeting held in Tuatapere to discuss the Emergency Precautions Scheme, there was an attendance of 22 residents. Mr B. C. Horrell, chairman of the Wallace County Council, was in the chaii. He briefly outlined the work of the organization and referred to the value of such a scheme whether in time of peace or war. At the last meeting it was decided to write to Mr W. H. Gregory, controller of lighting for Southland, about the steps necessary. A reply had been received stating that probably there would be little sky-glow from the street lights and only those visible from the sea would need attention. Houses near the coast would have to be inspected. It was reported that Mr Gregory would be visiting the district shortly and would then be able to give more definite advice. The following were appointed to the chief committees: Controller, Mr A. Rillstone; sub-controllers, Supply, Mr W. R. Langmuir; communications, Mr E. Tyndall; medical and nursing. Dr. E. M. Elder; fire, law and order, Constable E. S. Skipworth; transport, Mr J. King; accommodation and evacuation, Mr F. Harrison. Mr C. F. Bruce was appointed secretary and the appointment of subcontroller of lighting is to be deferred until after Mr Gregory’s visit.
Application will be made for sufficient booklets to enable each subcontroller to study his particular work. At the next public meeting those willing to assist will be appointed to the committees for which they are most suitable.
