GOOD PROGRESS IN PAYING OF RATES

“The payment of rates is proceeding very satisfactorily,” said the clerk of the South Invercargill Borough Council, Mr L. G. Kelly, in his report to a meeting of the council last evening. “So far.” said the report, “the sum of £636 has been collected of a total levy of £1776.” The payments of arrears of rates, however, were well below those of last year. “The Kew road is in very fair condition,” said the report, “and it would seem to be a suitable time for the sealing before the winter sets in as it would be impossible to do the work under winter conditions.” It was resolved that the Southland County engineer, Mr G. R. Milward, be approached to see if the time was opportune to have the road tar sealed. A communication was received from the city traffic inspector, Mr E. Stopford, suggesting that the sign on the Bluff road restricting the speed of vehicles to 30 miles an hour be shifted from its present position on the city and borough boundary, to the south side of Kew road. It was decided to accede to the request and to shift the sign in Elies road similarly. Those present at the meeting were: The Mayor, Mr O. Smith, and Councillors D. Harris, W. F. Young, O. H. Paton and E. H. Smith.
