DATE OF PIONEERING DAYS
Who are the people who can rightly claim to be the pioneers of New Zealand? This question was asked by Mr John Fisher, when responding to the toast of “The Pioneers,” at the jubilee banquet of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, South Invercargill, last night. He said some people claimed that no one who arrived in New Zealand after 1860 could be classed as a pioneer. During the 70’s there was a large influx of people into New Zealand, a great number of vessels arriving with thousands of immigrants. Therefore, there were some who said that a person was a pioneer if he arrived by or before 1869, but that after that he was a new chum and did not have a standing.
