ONLY SURVIVING ELDER

The oldest member present at the banquet held last night to celebrate the golden jubilee of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, South Invercargill, was Mr Alexander Henderson, of 300 Dee street. Mr Henderson, who is 96 years of age, is the only surviving member of the first session elected by the congregation of St. Andrews.

The minister of St. Andrews, the Rev. E. Gardiner, who presided at the banquet, said he hoped that everyone present would be as fit and well as Mr Henderson was when he reached the age of 96. Mr Henderson now attended St. Paul’s Church, and Mr Tocker had told him that his regular attendance at the services was an example which many much younger people might well follow. Mr Henderson was given a hearty round of applause when he rose to light one of the candles on the birthday cake, and also when he rose to respond to the toast of The Pioneers.
