MEETING OF LIBRARY ASSOCIATION
GRANTING OF UNIVERSITY DEGREE (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, February 21. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Library Association was held today, Dr G. H. Scholefield presiding. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:— Patron: The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser. President: Mr W. C. Prosser (Rangiora). Vice-presidents: Miss E. Melville (Auckland), Messrs J. Barr (Auckland), A. G. W. Dunningham (Dunedin), W. J. Gaudin (Wellington) and H. C. D. Somerset (Feilding). Council: Miss A. K. Elliott (Timaru), Professor W. A. Sewell (Auckland), Messrs G. T. Alley (Wellington), E. B. Ellern (Auckland), J. Harris (Dunedin). A. L. Low (New Plymouth), D. H. Monro (Auckland) and C. R. H. Taylor (Wellington). Honorary secretary and treasurer: Mr J. Norrie (Wellington).
Honorary assistant secretary and treasurer: Mr C. S. Perry (Wellington). Honorary counsel and solicitor: Mr J. O’Shea (Wellington). Honorary auditor: Mr B. O. Peterson (Wellington). Honorary editor: Mr C. S. Perry. A lengthy discussion took place on the scheme for granting a degree in librarianship, so that librarians might acquire a university professional status, and it was finally decided on the motion of Professor Sewell that concerning training and examining in librarianship the Standing Committee of the council be asked to name three of its members to consult with three representatives of the University Senate to determine the possibility of co-operation between the university and the Library Association in this matter. The notice of motion by the Hamilton library that the question of formulating a scheme for indenting books and magazines for all libraries belonging to the association be referred to the council for consideration, and the report was also carried. A further motion was carried that, in view of the difficulties the association had had in obtaining satisfactory buying terms with booksellers, the conference request the Municipal Conference to consider the matter with a view to obtaining a definite contract with the New Zealand Booksellers’ Association.
PLANES APPROACH MALTA.— Enemy fighters approached Malta yesterday, but withdrew when British fighters went up to intercept them. (Rugby.).
