CROQUET

SENIOR AND JUNIOR FINALS (Special to The Times) DUNEDIN, February 23. The finals of the senior and junior in the Otago croquet tournament were played yesterday, when the weather and the lawns were ideal. On Friday the intermediate cup had been won by Mrs Murray (Southland) and the fate of the senior and junior cups was at stake. Mrs Halstead and Mrs Metcalf played-off for winner of the second life of the A grade final, Mrs Metcalf winning 26-4. Mrs Metcalf then met Mrs Holmes in the best of three games for the cup. The first game was short and sharp, Mrs Metcalf winning 26-22. In the second game Mrs Metcalf started off well again, making six to baulk in seventh. Mrs Metcalf hit in and went to rover in a cleverly-played round. Mrs Metcalf made another two and went boundary to let Mrs Holmes in again and make another eight hoop ,and in another two turns she pegged out winner 26-8. In the third game both were cautious, rather than brilliant, and after an interesting contest Mrs Holmes had a meritorious win 26-18. Results were as follows: CHAMPION SINGLES A Grade Final (second life): Mrs Metcalf beat Mrs Halstead 26-4; final (best of three games); Mrs Holmes (Rugby Park, Invercargill) beat Mrs Metcalf (Logan Park) 2-26, 26-8, 26-18. B Grade Semi-final: Mrs Suckling beat Mrs Guest 26-19. Final: Mrs Jones (Christchurch) beat Mrs Suckling (Christchurch) 26-8.
