WINNER OF D.F.C.
SQUADRON-LEADER BLAKE'S SCHOOL CAREER The rector of the Southland Boys’ High School, Dr G. H. Uttley, referred yesterday to the great honour conferred on an old boy of the school, Squadron Leader Minden Vaughan Blake, who has won the Distinguished Flying Cross, Squadron Leader Blake, he said, had gained great distinction by his outstanding courage and devotion to duty. He was at school from 1926-29 and proved himself a good scholar as well as a good athlete. His gynmastic work stood him in good stead in later years for in 1936, representing Canterbury College, he won the New Zealand pole vault championship. As a scholar Blake gained the degree of M.Se. in mathematics. His practical mind enabled him to invent the Blake electric egg grader, an invention which was used throughout New Zealand.. “Squadron Leader Blake has had a rapid rise in the Royal Air Force and is one of the few New Zealanders in England who has attained the rank of squadron leader,” said Dr Uttley.
