PATRIOTIC COUNCIL MEETS

At a meeting of the executive of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council those present were: Messrs W. Grieve (chairman), the Deputy-Mayor (Mr J. R. Martin) and Messrs H. C. Gimblett and W. F. Sturman.

Letters of appreciation of Christmas parcels were received from Major J. Mackenzie and Private R. D. L. Simpson, of the Middle East Forces. The sergeant of the Awarua Military Guard also conveyed thanks for Christmas gifts. The secretary of the National Patriotic Fund Board wrote giving particulars of the goods forwarded to the Greek Government at a total cost of £10,250, stating that he would advise the council of its proportion of the charges incurred. It was decided to inform the secretary that the executive was still of the opinion that the cost of these goods should be met from the accumulated Red Cross Fund and that he be asked to take up the matter with the authorities concerned. The Secretary of the National Patriotic Fund Board also wrote advising that £7003 was the council’s quota of the sum required by the National Patriotic Fund Board. The secretary was directed to forward an advance grant of £5OOO. It was decided to make a donation of £32/10/- . to the Union Jack Club, Christchurch, towards' the cost of providing billiard tables for the men at Burnham.
