THREE WINNERS TO F. VOIGHT

Comment On Winton Running Valcron won the Novice Stakes decisively after being kept behind the leaders for more than half a mile. The start was a ragged one, Silver Night getting the worst of it and being left a couple of lengths. Valcron was the first to show out from Slamannan and Southern Light and after the field had gone a furlong Bantas went to the front and ! led past the half mile from Southern I Light, Top Spin, Slamannan, Campus I and Valcron on the outside of the field. I Bantas held his lead across the top. j but swung wide at the turn into the straight and Southern Light went to the front from Bantas and Valcron. Valcron caught Southern Light about the distance and went on to win by half a length from Southern Light, with Top Spin, who finished strongly a neck away. Then came Bantas, Susie, Ballyaggan and Campus. GAYOLA’S SUCCESS Fervent, the Quite Sure three-year-old in T. Cosgrove’s stable, was backed and beaten in the Otapiri Trot, which was won well by the consistent Gayola, back-marker in the field. Brown Cloud turned around the wrong way when the barrier went up. Fervent and Two Crowns led out from Southern Wrack and Sunnydell and Quite Good. Fervent took up the running from Southern Wrack and Two Crowns, but the lastnamed fell when racing across the top and took no further part in the race. Rosrcywin, Sunnydell and Gayola were close behind the leaders and the order into the straight the first time was I Southern Wrack and Fervent together, i then Rosrcywin, Sunnydell and Gayola. I The last-named improved her position I as the field raced into the back stretch i and at the half mile she was in third i place behind Fervent and Rosreywin. Gayola raced up to Fervent before the , straight was reached and in a good fin- j ish Gayola stayed on well and beat i Fervent by two lengths. Sunnydell beat Rosreywin on the post for third ' place 20 lengths behind the leaders. | 3-2 W. Swale's ROYAL LANCER, ' 7.6 (W. F. Ellis) 2 | 1- J. Morrison's CRAIGLEA, 7.11 : car. 7.121 (L. J. Then came Southern Wrack with the rest well behind. AN IMPRESSIVE WIN Heidelberg won the Winton Cup impressively after being fairly slowly away. He covered a lot of ground on the outside of the field for about half a mile, but was then taken up to the leaders and was kept in a handy position. The start was a good one in which Peony Rose, Wild Career and Mona’s Song were the first to take up the running. Sparkle was quickly taken to the front and with Peony Rose led the field out of the straight, the order into the back being Peony Rose, Sparkle, Doubleack, Mona’s Song, Heidelberg and Wild Career. Heidelberg raced up to Peony Rose and Sparkle at the half mile where Peony Rose weakened and was headed by Doubleack. Sparkle and Heidelberg were the first into the straight from Doubleack and in the run home Heidelberg finished strongly and won well by a length from Doubleack. i with Sparkle a neck away third. Then | came Peony Rose, Mona's Song and i Wild Career. I SEA LADY ALL THE WAY | Sea Lady, winner of the Flying Handicap, was one of the first out and was never headed. She made all of the pace and stayed on when challenged to register a first-class performance in time equalling the record for Otago and Southland. She was the outsider of the field and paid a win dividend of more than a score. It was her first race in open company. Ortyx refused to go up to the barrier and the field was sent away without her. Sea Lady, Royal Lancer, Nightcalm and Craiglea all got away well and when the field had settled down Sea Lady showed out from Craiglea with Royal Lancer and Fleet Street well placed. Gold Flight, Phalanx, Nightcalm and Skyrena were next. Sea Lady held her I position across the top from Craiglea I and Phalanx and into the straight the 1 order was Sea Lady, Craiglea, Night- I calm and Royal Lancer. In a hard fin- | ish Roval Lancer just failed by three quarters of a length to reach Sea Lady, i with Craiglea a neck away third. Then I came Skyrena, Nightcalm, Fleet Street. Phalanx and Gold Flight. COLONEL FRENCH WINS WELL Colonel French won the Winton | Steeplechase pointlessly after racing be- | hind the leaders for the greater part of | the journey. Pandine, the win favour- i ite, lost his rider when he hit the brush fence between the half mile and three furlongs after the field had gone about seven furlongs. He was galloping well at the time. Pandine and Airdrie were the early leaders from Bow Street, El Caballo. Gold Boa, Colonel French and Prince Flaneur. The last-named was a long way back last. Along the back the first | time Gold Boa ran up to Airdrie and | Pandine lost his rider. Gold Boa took the lead from Airdrie who was three lengths in front of El Caballo as they raced through the straight the second time. Bow Street jumped badly and lost his position and at the half mile Prince Flaneur had made up a lot of ground. Colonel French joined the leaders across the top and he and Air-

drie drew out from El Caballo and Prince Flaneur. Colonel French was first over the last hurdle and went on for a comfortable win from Aiidrie with Gold Boa eight lengths away third and Prince Flaneur next. Airdrie was very Jame when he returned to the birdcage. SOUTHERN SAIL EASILY F. Voight, the Invercargill trainer, completed the hat trick in training successes when Southern Sail won the Barkly Handicap in convincing style. She was un with the leaders across the top and before the straight was reached she ran into the lead. Thereafter she practically won as she liked from Ackemma, who put in a great, burst in the straight and cut out Philibun for second money. The start was a good one in which Philibun showed out from Kippen, Pink Dress and Southern Sail, with Colonel Rouge, Ackemma and Shantyman at the rear of the field. Pink Dress and Philibun led across the top from Southern Sail, with Kippen and Colonel Rouge moving up. Southern Sail was first into the straight from Kippen, Philibun and Colonel Rouge and in the run to the judge Southern Sail drew out and won by four lengths from Ackemma, who was half a length in front of Gnohill. Then came Gold Robe and Shantyman. Gnohill and Gold Robe were prominent in fourth and fifth place about the half mile, but neither threatened danger.

TURCO SCORES Turco made no race of the Hokonui Trot and in winning lived up to the reputation he made for himself last season. He made a quick beginning and before the field had gone a furlong he had made up his handicap of 24 yards. Thereafter he was kept in front by J. Walsh and won with comparative ease from Peter Young and Irish Guy. Rey Chimes was slow away and Icilma broke up at the start. Nancy Guy and Fenella were the leaders but within a furlong Turco had run up to them and before the straight was reached the order was Turco, Fenella, Malrose, Peter Young, Irish Guy and Rey Chimes. Turco and Fenella piloted the field along the back and Melrose and Peter Young were racing in a handy position. At the half mile Peter Young ran up to Turco and into the straight Turco led Peter Young by a length with Rey Chimes and Irish Guy next. In the run home Turco came right away and won by five lengths from Peter Young with Irish Guy third. Then came Rey Chimes. Debtor was next. COMBAT’S GOOD WIN Combat made practically all his own pace in the Tradesmen’s Handicap and won well by a length from Araboa with half a length to Blissful Lady. The race was run at a fast clip. Sailing Lady was slow away and Araboa and Combat made the running from Blissful Lady and Boaform. Along the back Combat drew out to a two lengths’ lead from Araboa and Sailing Lady and half a length from home the order was the same, with Boaform the favourite making a move in fourth place. Sailing Lady ran into second place across the top, but gave way to Araboa who finished well in second place behind Combat who won full of running. Blissful Lady was third, Boaform was fourth and Sailing Lady was last.
