FORTIFICATION OF ATLANTIC BASES

(Received February 14, 5.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, February’ 13. The Under-Secretary for War, Mr Patterson, announced that 137,096,000 dollars worth of contracts had been negotiated for an immediate start on fortifying six of the Atlantic bases leased from Britain. Mr Roosevelt has asked for a further 40,917,000 dollars for cash and contract authorizations for harbour improvements and defences, including harbours in Alaska, Hawaii and Panama.
