BROADCAST LIES UNMASKED

(British Official Wireless) (Received February 11, 7.30 p.m.) RUGBY, February 10. Mr Churchill’s speech revealed that all necessary repairs had been made to the aircraft-carrier Illustrious in Malta harbour, and that she had steamed safely off to Alexandria under her own power. It is interesting to recall German broadcast claims in this respect. Zeesen radio stated: “It will scarcely be disputed that the most serious loss the Royal Navy suffered was that of the Illustrious. Whether she lingers on the surface or has gone to the bottom, it is quite certain that she cannot be used any more during the war.” Another broadcast lie is recalled by yesterday’s Admiralty communique on the heavy bombardment of Genoa by the Renown, Malaya, Ark Royal and other ships. The Rome radio, in Italian, on January 17, said: “Perhaps, in the course of the next few days there will be an admission of the torpedoing of the Malaya and other cruisers or destroyers, which were extensively damaged or sunk.”
