YOUTH COMMENDED FOR BRAVERY

The presentation of a framed letter of commendation from the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand for an act of bravery was macle to Thomas McDonald Cushen, aged 17, son of Mr J. A. Cushen, at the meeting of the City Council last night. The Deputy-Mayor (Mr J. R. Martin), who macle the presentation, said that Cushen had saved from drowning A. M. Bradfield when swimming in the Orcti river at Oreti last Easter. There was no doubt that the boy would have been drowned but for Cushen’s action.

Mr H. J. Farrant said he had represented the Royal Humane Society lor a number of years and only three awards had been made in that time. This showed that the awards were not made lightly. He thanked Mr H. J. Botting for tho full information which he had supplied of the act of bravery. He congratulated the boy on his rescue.
