STOCK SALE AT LORNEVILLE

Improved Values Yesterday GENERAL RISE OF 20/FOR FAT CATTLE Values for both fat sheep and fat cattle showed an improvement at the Lorneville stock sale yesterday compared with the sale last week. The sale of fat cattle opened with values on a par with last week and as the sale progressed prices improved steadily. There was a general rise of 15/- to 20/- for all classes. More fat sheep were yarded yesterday and values rose by about 1/- compared with last sale. Butchers and export buyers operated freely for the entry of fat lambs. The following are the yardings in the individual sections at the last two sales:

FAT SHEEP i The fat sheep yarding was larger than |

last week and included some better quality ewes and wethers. From beginning to end the sale was quite fair, values being from par to 1/- better. Good quality medium-weight wethers made from 26/6 to 27/6, handy weights 25/- to 26/-, lightweights 21/- to 23/-; prime quality ewes 15/6 to 17/-, good quality 14/6 to 15/3, medium 13/- to 14/-, lightweights 11/- to 12/-. There was a small entry of goodquality lambs, for which butchers and export buyers operated quite freely. The values realized were quite up to export schedule rates. Extra prime heavy lambs made up to 32/-, prime quality 26/- to 27/6, good quality mediumweights 24/- to 25/6, light and unfinished 18/- to 21/-.

Best conditioned wether lambs made up to 19/-, medium sorts from 16/- to 17/6, light and cull sorts down to 8/-. Two lines of good Romney cross ewe lambs made 25/- and 25/7 respectively. Others brought from 18/- to 21/-, with small sorts down to 15/-. Failingmouth ewes realized from 6/- to 10/-, according to age and condition. There were no good 2-tooth ewes offered, a pen of small sorts selling at 22/-. A mixed pen of 4,6, and 8-tooth ewes realized 15/3. Two-tooth wethers made from 18/- to 22/-.

FAT CATTLE The entry was composed chiefly of cows, a small proportion of which were of good quality. The majority, however, were unfinished. A few pens of very good quality bullocks were included, but good quality heifers were in short supply. The sale opened with values quite on a par with last week and showed a steady improvement, the market, finishing up to as much as 30/- better. There was a general rise of 15/- to 20/- for all classes. Top lines of 18-month steers sold at from £7/11/to £7/15/-, heifers making £6/2/6 to £6/12/-. Best empty cows made up to £5/15/-, medium £4 to £4/10/-, culls down to £l.

An advertised line of dairy cows averaged about £lO, top price being £l6/10/-. Because of the shortage of
