PROPOSED RABBIT DISTRICT
MEETING HELD AT GORGE ROAD A meeting of ratepayers convened by the directors of the Gorge Road Dairy Factory was Reid at Gorge Road on Saturday evening to consider the proposal to form a rabbit district in the Gorge Road and surrounding district. About 60 ratepayers attended, including several from the Toa and Waimatuku districts. Also present were Mr G. O. Mackley and Mr G. McNally, of the Department of Agriculture, and Mr D. McPherson and Mr Thomas Mackenzie, two of the trustees of the New River Hundred, rabbit district. Mr A. E. Millard, chairman of the Gorge Road dairy factory, was elected chairman. The chairman said that he and his co-directors of the factory considered that the formation of a rabbit district in their locality and surrounding district to be worked on similar lines to other rabbit boards in Southland would be in the best interests of all the dairy- i men and farmers generally. Mr Mackley, before explaining the legal procedure for the formation of a rabbit district and the methods of working it, stated that he was very pleased
at seeing the interest that was being taken in the procedure. He stated that in the last 12 months in Southland three new rabbit districts had been constituted and two other districts had enlarged their original areas by several thousand acres. Three proposed districts had obtained the required majority and their petitions would be forwarded to Wellington at an early date for the Government’s approval. Two other proposed districts were in the initial stages with every prospect of success. Mr McPherson, chairman of the New River Hundred Rabbit Board, and Mr Mackenzie also addressed the meeting, giving information of their experience as farmers of the great assistance their rabbit board had been to the district. After several questions had been replied to by Mr Mackley and Mr Mackenzie a provisional committee was set up comprising Messrs R. E. Montieth, L. A. Niederer, D. Thomas, D. Faulkner, G. Hamil, W. McLellan and J. Neill to define the boundaries of the proposed district and to proceed at once with
the necessary steps to have the area constituted a rabbit district. A vote of thanks to the various speakers and chairman was carried.
