The engagement is announced of Francis S. Johnstone, R.N.Z.A.F., eldest son of the late Captain D. C. Johnstone, Tyne street, and Jean, second daughter of Mr and Mrs Griffiths, William street, Timaru.

Mrs J. J. Ward and Mrs J. M. Shearer, Bowmont street, have left for & holiday in the north. Mr and Mrs Arthur Elworthy, Holme Station, Timaru, are the guests of Mrs W. N, Bond, Dunrobin Station. Mrs C. Shirley, Princes street, with her son and Miss K. Spence, Morton street, is spending a holiday at the Kocks.

Mrs R. E. Free, of Christchurch, who has been the guest of Mrs W. A. Ott, Gala street, leaves today on her return north.

Southland players who will take part in the Otago Croquet tournament which opens in Dunedin today include Mesdames Gerrard, J. Murray, W. Corbet, Strang, Holmes, D. L. Robinson and Keen.

Miss A. E. Lorimer, formerly analyst to the Wellington City Council, has left New Zealand to join Miss Jean Begg, who has been appointed by the British Government to organize war service work for uniformed women in Egypt. A lunch room has recently been opened in London in the cellar of the National Gallery, for use of the forces and workers at nearby Ministries. It is run on the American “Help yourself ’ system, the prices being kept as low as possible. As all the workers are voluntary, however, there is still a profit for war charities.

Mrs Knox Gilmer, of Wellington, a member of the Dominion Council and Dominion Executive of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary, visited Gore last night and addressed a meeting held in the Women’s Club. Mrs Gilmer will arrive in Invercargill today by the midday express and will be a guest at the Grand Hotel. Tomorrow she will leave for Timaru after addressing a meeting tonight in the supper room of the Victoria Concert Chamber for the inauguration of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary in Invercargill.

SUITS AND SMALL HATS POPULAR FINAL DAY OF GORE RACES Light frocks and coats and suits were seen again at tire last day of the Gore Racing Club's summer meeting yesterday. The weather was marred by a strong breeze, and because of this those who chose turbans and toques fared better than those who had decided on wide shady hats. WEDDING MARSHALL-RITCHIE The wedding was solemnized recently at First Presbyterian Church of Dorothy Mary, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs A. H. Ritchie, Mitchell street, and Alexander Robert, only son of Mr and Mrs L. Marshall, Chapman street. The Rev. J. A. Thompson performed the ceremony and Miss Hay was organist. Tire bride was given away by her father, and wore a gown of deep magnolia satin. The heart-shaped neckline was finished with a posy sprig of orange blossom, and the sleeves finished in a point over the hand. The circular train was hand embroidered with cream roses at the hem, and a veil of cut tulle fell from a coronet of pearls and orange blossom. She wore a single rope of pearls, and carried a shower bouquet of cream roses, abutilons and maidenhair fern. Miss Margaret Ritchie, sister of the bride, and Miss Edna Marshall, sister of the bridegroom, were bridesmaids. They wore Empire frocks of lavender net over cyclamen taffetas. The full skirts were finished at the hem with a rucking of net, and the heart-shaped neckline, sleeves and skirt were trimmed with diamond shaped cameos of shaded velvet violets edged with pleated net. They wore wide lace hats to match, and carried shower bouquets in lavender and pink. Each wore a single rope of pearls. Mr S. Richardson was best man, and Mr Gordon Lindsay was groomsman, while Messrs J. Crowe and B. Peterson acted as ushers. The reception was held at Elmwood Garden, where the guests were received by’ the bride’s mother and Mrs Marshall. During the reception two recitations were given by Mrs J. T. Wilson. For travelling the bride wore a dusky pink model frock under a pale grey flared coat with grey accessories. Before her marriage the bride was entertained by the staff of Herbert Haynes Co., Mrs J. T. Wilson, Pomona street, Miss Edna Marshall, Chapman street, and Miss Greta Kerr, Nelson street. Mr and Mrs A. R. Marshall are living in Louisa street. COUNTRY NEWS WINTON Mrs N. E. Pierce, of Invercargill, was the guest of Mrs H. A. Pierce, Park street, last week-end. Mr and Mrs G. W. Walters, were wwitors to Dunedin last week. Ur and Mrs D. C. Legat and their family have been spending a holiday at Riverton. Miss S. Horsburgh, Park street, spent the week-end in Invercargill. Misses I. Maley and N. McDermott, Albert street, have returned from a holiday at the Rocks. Mr and Mrs J. T. Shaw, John street, have returned from a holiday at Queenstown, Miss A. Hewitt, South Winton, spent the week-end at Dipton. Mr and Mrs W. Nicol and their family, of Limehills, were recent visitors to Riverton. Mr and Mrs J. D. Cameron and their family have returned to Dunedin after spending a holiday with Mrs R. M. Martin, Park street.
