“WE SHALL NOT FAIL”
Fighting Speech By Mr Churchill CONFIDENCE IN FUTURE (United Press Association —Telegraph Copyright) (Received February 10, 8 p.m.) LONDON, February 9. “Put your confidence in us. Give us your faith and your blessing, and under Providence, all will be well. We shall not fail or falter, we shall not weaken or tire. Neither the sudden shock of battle nor the long-drawn trials will wear us down. Give us the tools and we shall finish the job.” With these words the British Prime Minister concluded a broadcast speech to people at home and overseas tonight. Mr Churchill said that the words quoted were a message which he had sent to Mr Roosevelt in reply to one from the President. The speech has created a good impression in America. Senator G. Glass characterized the speech as “magnificent. It’s a damned sight better speech than anyone in the Senate will make against the Aid to Britain Bill.” Senator Elbert Thomas said: “It proves that blood and sweat can accomplish something.” Senator Wallace White, a Republican, described the speech as “full of courage and hope,” and Senator Sheppard stated it “was fine and reassuring.”
