NURSE’S APPLICATION FOR REMITTANCES

(United Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 9. Tire Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, has made a reply to the complaint at Napier by the Mayor, Mr Horcock, of it having come to his notice that a nurse with the New Zealand Forces overseas was not permitted to withdraw £25 from her savings in New Zealand to replace an outfit destroyed in a fire. “The only case of the sort the records show,” said Mr Fraser, “is one in which, when the facts were reported, an additional grant of £4O in Egyptian currency was approved to enable the nurse to replace the uniform and clothing lost. There is no record of any cablegram having been received by the Minister. The facts were that the nurse referred to lodged a written application with the base paymaster on December 7 for an additional remittance of £2O, not £25, and the application was transmitted to New Zealand. The sum requested was cabled immediately, although before December the nurse had already received the maximum remittance permissible at that time.”

Mr Fraser added that an inquiry was being made overseas to ascertain whether any delay had occurred in reporting the incident or dealing with the application in Egypt.
