CANTERBURY SWEPT BY HIGH WIND
(United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, February 9. A high north-west wind reaching gale force at times swept Christchurch and the Canterbury plains this morning. The maximum gust recording was 74 miles an hour. In the city itself no great damage was done, apart from a plate glass window in a shop, which was blown in. Some trees were blown down and some suburban fences were levelled. There were minor interruptions to the power supply. In the fruit growing areas of Papanui and Harewood orchardists suffered heavily, many trees of early apples being almost stripped.
