Cousin Betty's Letter

My dear Cousins, Did you make any New Year resolutions last month? If all Tattle Southlanders resolved to write often and work hard for the Chronicle Cousin Betty would be satisfied. Good resolutions are made to be kept, of course. Percy Pencil has resolved to be always happy and contented, never to lose his temper and break his point. “That sounds too good to be true,” says Penelope Pencil. We shall see. My congratulations to two senior Little Southlanders who have done particularly well in recent examinations. They are Mary Maloney and Graeme Anderson, two cousins who have brought credit to the Chronicle. Visiting days began last week, and the feet which.came running up Sally Staircase told everyone in the building that Cousin Betty was having a visiting day and that the school year had commenced in earnest. Town cousins may come to see me on Mondays (boys), and Tuesdays (girls), and country cousins may climb Sally Staircase on whichever day they happen to be in town. It is always best for country visitors to let me know which day they are likely to be here, so that they will not be disappointed and find my room empty. Now here is an important notice for all Little Southlanders who have taken books from our library. At the end of last year I asked for the books to be returned, but many of them are still in your homes, sitting on bookshelves, perhaps put away and forgotten during the holidays. Spring clean your book shelves (or should I say summer clean?) and see if you have any of our bluecovered volumes tucked away. If you have any pack them into your school cases, and bring them up to me as soon as you can. No new books may be taken from the library until you have returned yours, so do not waste any time. The sooner the books are returned, the sooner the library will be opened again. My thanks to all of those cousins who sent Christmas and New Year greetings. I know from your letters that you had a happy time during the holidays, so now I wish you a busy and successful year. Your loving
