FINE DISPLAY OF CRICKET

Canterbury Women’s Team In perfect playing conditions the representative women’s cricket match between Southland and Canterbury was begun yesterday on the Doon street ground. At the close of the day’s play Canterbury had completed its first innings with 170 runs on the board, and Southland had made 77 runs in its first innings, following on to compile 97 runs for the loss of one wicket. The wicket was in good order and the outfield was in excellent condition, though a little soft after recent rain. The visitors won the toss and decided to bat, Z. Hocking and M. Marks taking first strike. M. Thomas and E. Blackie opened the attack and the first wicket, that of Z. Hocking, fell rather cheaply. M. Marks was joined at the wicket by P. Taylor, but she was dismissed after scoring one run. It was H. Steere who then gave the game a different complexion. She gave a very forceful display of batting to compile 71, this total including two 6’s. Her performance was the highlight of the day’s play. She appeared very much at home at the wicket and her shots were all played with a clean precision. M. Marks batted carefully for 24. Southland’s fielding was excellent. Tlie returns were both fast and accurate and the picking up was done with precision. In Southland’s first innings the Canterbury fielding was good and was largely responsible for the very small score put up by the home side. Low scoring was general in the first innings, the highest knock being M. Maley’s 25. Canterbury’s bowling was very accurate.

After being dismissed for 77 in its first innings Southland followed on and by adopting different tactics was able to put 97 runs on the board for one wicket down. This score' : was put up in 59 minutes. The match will be continued today. Details:—
