DEATH OF TRAINEE AT BELL BLOCK

(United Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, February b. The inquest was concluded before the Coroner, Mr W. H. Woodward, into the death of Leading Aircraftman Maurice S. Best at the flying school at Bell Block on December 6 when he was struck by a landing plane. The verdict was that he died as a result of being struck while walking along the perimeter of the aerodrome by some part of an aeroplane in the act of landing, death resulting from severe haemorrhage. Robert S. Bruce, a trainee, who was walking from the rifle range with Leading Aircraftman Best, said they were both watching the plane, which seemed to be coming in normally. Then it went into a slip and seemed to be coming straight at them. He yelled to his companion and dropped to the ground. When he sat up he saw the plane go on. He looked towards his companion, who was lying stiffly on the ground and bleeding profusely from the mouth. He signalled the ambulance.
