STEAMER AGROUND AT GREYMOUTH

(United Press Association) GREYMOUTH, February 7. The steamer Korowai became stranded on an isolated shingle bank in the Grey river at 7 a.m. while turning to sail for Auckland with 1400 tons of cargo comprising coal and timber. The steamer Karu on this evening’s tide unsuccessfully endeavoured to free the Korowai which, however, was liberated at 8.15 p.m. by two railway locomotives on the wharf. The locomotives, after half an hour’s pulling, freed tire vessel’s bow.

The Korowai, which sails tomorrow morning, was only slightly damaged in the stern belting.
