JAPAN AND EAST INDIES
PROGRESS OF TRADE NEGOTIATIONS
(Received February 7, 8 p.m.) LONDON, February 6.
The Dutch East Indies are thus far not dissatisfied with the progress of the Japanese-Dutch negotiations, but they recognize that their future trend probably depends largely on events in Europe,” says the correspondent of The Times in Singapore. Mr Yoshizawa, leader of the Japanese commercial mission in the Dutch East Indies, told a Dutch newspaper that the Japanese had submitted a memorandum to the Dutch delegation providing a solid basis for discussions and giving shape to Japan’s wishes for an increase in trade with the Dutch East Indies, especially a bigger share of the Indies’ exports of minerals. The memorandum also indicated Japan’s desire to participate on a bigger scale in the development of the Indies’ oil resources. Japan, like every great nation, had aspirations, but she did not intend forcibly to impose a new order on the Indies. Also, Japan had no desire to reshape the map of Europe The Singapore correspondent of The Times says it is understood that the Dutch have presented counter-proposals to the Japanese requests, which include permission to explore the outer islands, the right to establish an air line to the Indies, mining and fishing concessions, exploitation of undeveloped areas, permission for Japanese professional men to enter the Indies and the right to establish small businesses.
