TERM OF TWO MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT
CONVICTION FOR ASSAULT AT OAMARU (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, February 6. “His present predicament is due to a misguided excess of patriotism,” said Mr C. S. Thomas, his counsel, when William Meehan, who was acquitted by a jury yesterday on an attempted murder charge, but was convicted of assault at Oamaru, appeared before Mr Justice Kennedy today for sentence. Meehan was 43 years of age and a married man with a family of five, said Mr Thomas. His previous record as a citizen was unblemished. He had served for two years in the Great War and at the outbreak of the present one had volunteered with the National Reserve for service either at home or overseas. ,Meehan had been nearly four months in prison and counsel asked his Honour to take this lact into consideration. His Honour said that such an assault could not be too strongly condemned. In view of the time prisoner had already been in custody the sentence of the Court would be two months’ imprisonment with hard labour.
