RED CROSS MISUSED BY ITALY
AIR AMBULANCE CARRIES MUNITIONS (British Official Wireless) (Received February 6, 9.0 p.m.) RUGBY, February 5. A broadcast over the Italian radio against the alleged “boast” in a British Broadcasting Corporation programme that an Italian Red Cross aircraft flying to Tobruk was shot down by a British fighter was the subject of an inquiry. It was discovered that no such boast or claim was ever made by the British Broadcasting Corporation. What actually happened was that a Red Cross machine was not shot down, but was forced to land by a British fighter. When this Italian aircraft was examined it was found to contain correspondence, ammunition and spare parts for Breda, 20mm. guns. It will be remembered that Britain has already had cause to complain of the illegal use made of the Red Cross by Germany, and a warning was given some time ago to both Germany and Italy. Red Cross aircraft or ships cannot be given immunity if they enter areas in which active operations are in progress-
