THREAT OF REVOLT IN CUBA
ARMY" AND NAVY CHIEFS ARRESTED HAVANA, Februarv 4. An anonymous telephone call to General Batista threatening to “fire the palace” preceded the arrests of Army and Navy chiefs. The threat is reported to have been part of a plot by military leaders to assassinate . General Batista at midnight. The plot was abandoned due to lack of support for a revolt. A later message states that General Batista left the Presidential Palace and took over personal command of the army and suspended the constitutional guarantees for 15 days following the resignations of the Army Chief, Jose Pedraza, the Navy Chief, Aurelio Gonzalez, and the national police chief, Bernardo Garcia. The trouble is reported to be due to a political dispute between departmental heads. Pedraza and Gonzalez have been arrested. The palace is heavily guarded with machineguns and sandbags. All journalists have been ejected and army leave cancelled.
Batista in a telephone interview from army headquarters said: “I am in complete command of the armed forces in order that peace may reign throughout the nation and no disturbances take place anywhere.”
